Get ready to feel reeeeeally sentimental, especially if you love dogs. This Friday marks 14 years since the 9/11 attacks, where so many people were killed and so many first responders put their own lives at risk in order to save others. Some of those responders were not human, but canine — over 300 of them, including Bretagne, a beautiful, hard-working golden retriever. Just a young pup at the time, Bretagne played a crucial role in helping to recover remains at the site, but also served as a comfort dog to the human workers as they went through this tragic ordeal.

Now, Bretagne is the only service dog known to be alive, and at the ripe old age of 16, she is getting a celebration worthy of her very accomplished life. BarkBox sponsored the trip for Bretagne and her mom Denise Corliss, both of them members of Texas Task Force 1, along with 1 Hotels, who gave Bretagne a very awesome day in New York City. Treated like a true VID — very important dog — Bretagne and Corliss (and her husband) got to stay in a fancy hotel with room service, get driven around the city in a vintage cab, mix and mingle with tons of people, and then end the day with a cake and presents. And Bretagne looks like she loved it, and while she is a dog and won’t exactly be posting about it on Instagram, all that mattered was that she got to feel so extra special and loved.
